In previous projects, asphalt was mostly black, but with the increasing demand for a colourful appearance in hard landscapes, there is a need to colour asphalt. The most widespread use of coloured pigments in asphalt or bitumen is in the road sector, which comes from traffic management, which allows for increased attention to driveways, pedestrian crossings and so on. Coloured asphalt is also used in sports facilities, gardens, interiors, driveways, car parks, footpaths, cycle paths, highways, shoulders, highway medians, streets and pavements. All asphalt pigments have excellent lightfastness and high colouring strength.

There are two types of coloured asphalt pigments, the traditional iron oxide pigments, which are darker in colour and less heat resistant.

This is particularly true of blues, greens, browns, grey, yellows and oranges. The modified type has brighter colours and better heat resistance, with blue having a resistance of 150-160 degrees Celsius and the other colours having a resistance of 160-170 degrees Celsius. In order to obtain the required coloured bitumen, decolourised bitumen is essential. In the manufacture of decolourised bitumen, the bitumen is coloured by the addition of colour pigments, which are packed in melted plastic bags and mixed with stones, sand and decolourised bitumen, which are then mixed to obtain the desired colour of the final mixture.
